The Dangers Of Ants In Your Home

Seeing ants crawling on your countertops, floorboards, and walls is disturbing and a potential health hazard. Ants are known for their painful bites, which can cause severe allergic reactions in some. Additionally, they can cause damage to your home, contaminate surfaces and food, and even spread bacteria. These pests can easily find their way into your home, leaving a pheromone trail for other ants to follow, compounding your problem. A do-it-yourself ant treatment rarely solves the problem—it's time to take your ant infestation seriously.

Identifying Ant Species in Texas

Texas is home to several types of ant species:

  • Black Ants: These are usually the ants your see coming up in small dirt piles around your home and making trails in your kitchen. Black ants do have stingers, but their biggest threat is contaminating your food.
  • Carpenter Ants: There are over 18 species of carpenter ants in Texas. These ants are ¼ to ⅛ inch long with a reddish brown head and thorax, and a black tail. They prefer to nest in trees but can live inside your home.
  • “Crazy” Ants: Named for their crazy haphazard movements which increase when threatened, this species looks like carpenter ants, but are smaller in size with a lighter-colored abdomen.
  • Fire Ants: Red or black in color, fire ants wield a nasty sting! A mount-by-mound elimination is required as well as ongoing preventative treatments to get rid of fire ants.
  • Odorous House Ants: These ants can be half the size of your pinky fingernail and give off a foul odor when threatened or crushed. Odorous house ants have a stinger and will bite if threatened.
  • Pharoah Ants: Also known as sugar ants, these light tan ants measure around 1/12 to 1/16 of an inch. Pharoah ants tend to feed on sweets and can be found anywhere inside your home.
  • Texas Leaf-Cutting Ants: Looking for a meal, these pests build nests in your lawn and destroy your vegetation. Mounds growing in your lawn are a sign you have this ant infesting your outdoor spaces.

An ant infestation can quickly get out of control. Contacting a trained ant control professional to identify the species infesting your home is your first step. The team at Alamo Termite & Pest Control will create a customized ant treatment plan for safe and effective removal and future prevention.
